Decide to Stay or Start OverIn worst-case scenarios, businesses will have to completely start over, and youll be out of a job- even if only temporarily. If your personal life or property has been affected as well, this may be a good time to relocate rather than rebuild. Sometimes the memories make it too hard to stay. Mattson is now counseling victims of the Camp Fire on deciding whether to stay and fight with insurance companies or take what money is available to begin anew somewhere else. If youre emotionally and financially able to remain, it may result in real-life work benefits. Participating in local charitable efforts can not only help the region recover, but also assist you in achieving some closure. And when offices and businesses re-open, employers remember those who acted on that intrinsic need for solidarity, as Bisztray witnessed while working with an organization called Nourishing the Lower Keys to feed those who were rebuilding. Over and over, those who were the most generous, selfless, and accommodating with their time and resources were rewarded.Most restaurants were running on skeleton staff- usually a chef and then the owner doing most everything else, or maybe one server available. Everyone was very patient, waiting for staff to return and get a grip on their home situation before they could return to work, she recalls. Working in-house, youre going to wake up thinking about the same mission every day, so its important that you have a whole lot of heart for it. Also, know early that youre going to have to put your ego to the side. In-house work is not about celebrating the singular designer or individual its about achieving a goal through the power of collaboration. It is definitely a team sport.What skills and attributes do you think will be necessary for in-house career advancement in the future?You need to have an equal understanding of brand- and business-building. Designers are now in leadership positions and are being asked to tackle the vast challenges that modern compa nies face. For years, weve been vying for a seat at the table and now we have it (which is actually a little daunting). Skills that make us unique as designers - like empathy, the ability to think holistically and systematically, and a level of taste and craft that allows us to execute with simplicity and ingenuity - will be invaluable to businesses.From your vantage point, how is the in-house environment changing?Its changing drastically every year. I think this moment is the most that people have ever talked about in-house design. There are so many talented designers working inside of companies and so many companies being founded by designers or building in-house teams. Its a crazy, exciting time for in-house creative professionals, and Im proud to be a part of it. Im finding that people who never considered working in-house are starting to think, How do I go work inside versus outside? As long as companies are valuing design and using it as a weapon to win, we will continue to see in-house grow.What unique opportunities do in-house creative jobs provide that others dont?I think that inside of every designer is the ambition to make an impact on the world that we live in - I know thats what motivates me. An in-house environment is the best place to create that impact and truly feel like you are building something. I admire and respect the work that agencies do, but at the end of the day they are always at the back seat of the businesses they work for. I like to drive the car.What most excites you about working in-house?I love having my hands in so many different types of projects at the same time, while working toward one mission. The more aspects of a business that people are involved in, the better they can be at solving problems and designing experiences. What To Know When You Start Working for a Painting Contractor CompanyWhat To Know When You Start Working for a Painting Contractor CompanyThis isnt my usual type of post, and I am NOT an expert on the subject, but I have a friend who is getting his home painted, and it reminds me of the time I hired a painting contractor for my own apartment. I only learned afterward how little the workers (the actual painters) knew about painting and how little they probably knew about the contractor they were working for.Since working for a house painting company is a great way to bring in some extra money, Im writing this to at least clue in anyone who is thinking about this kind of work for the first time. AND I hope that any contractor who reads this will just maybe think about his workers, and how to make the work sweeter for both of themWhat I learned from my painting contractor My friends contractor was especially happy to get the job, since he says it means his workers will have extra money for the holidays. The contractor I hired a few years ago took most of the money himselfThe way he worked the deal, he charged me $25/hr (elend all that unreasonable where I live for a good painter), and made it seem like he or a senior coach would be on the premises all the time. They werent.He also made it seem like he had experienced painters. But he got the guys he sent me off of Craigslist he didnt even train them. And he gave them only $10/hr, pocketing the other $15/hr for himself, even though he pretty much left them on their own. He told me all this after the job was done when I was making him give me back some money for the shoddy workmanship.What a painter should probably know I understand that when you need work, you worry that asking too many questions or seeming too pushy can lose you the job. And sometimes it can. But there are some basic things that can hopefully help improve the quality of the experience from all endsIf there is a way for you to ask directly or sn oop around, knowing how much the contractor charges might help you negotiate your own portion especially if you are really good at what you do or willing to take on some supervisory responsibilities. Always helps to know if there is wiggle room, or if he (or she) is cutting it close on their share.Make sure you find out exactly what the contractor promised the customer. If the customer thinks they are getting ALL cracks and holes repaired, and you were just told to just fix some of them and then start painting, that can cause a huge problem.Make sure you know how long the customer thinks the job should take, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Again, sometimes a promise is made that workers are unable to live up to and they get to deal with yelling customers.Makes sure you have enough ventilation for yourself while working, even with non-toxic paint. And, since you are using your arm and other muscles in a repetitive manner, take short but frequent stretch breaks.That said, if y ou are scheduled to start at 9am each day, even without a supervisor, dont take a whole hour to set up so that the customer walks in on you at 10am just hanging out and talking (each day) with the half-hour prep work still not done. Breaks are important, but remember how unsettling and costly this is to a customer.BEFORE you start painting, go over the repairs and make sure the customer is satisfied with the condition, so that you wont have to keep going back and repairing once youre in the painting stage.Ask the contractor for painting tips. Dont be shy or worry about appearing stupid. If the person is experienced in the business, there are some basics that will help make you both look great.Direction of the paint brush stroke (depending on type of paint, I think, different-direction strokes can show)Evenness and smoothness of the roller and / or paint brush techniqueHow to use painters tape the right way (you can also google some of this)Any other professional tricks tips they ca n offer youBe aware of and smooth out any drips or thicker globs as you paint.Check for unpainted or sparsely-painted sections, especially when the base coat and top coat are almost the same color.Make sure that the trim is all the right color finish, especially if you are dealing with similar shades.Check where paint got to places it shouldnt be, including where walls meet meet ceiling and trimAfter its done, either you or the contractor should go over the paint job with the customer, for any last touches or to correct mistakes. Not only does this help spot things you might have missed, it helps involve the customer so they are part of the final closing phase.And remember that, in addition to the actual paint job, a careful clean-up leaves a great last impression. For extra points, the contractor should offer the customer a chance to live with it a day or two, so they can discover anything that was not done well. Sometimes a customer is so happy its done, their brain doesnt engage fully. A good contractor should make some room for that without opening the door to forever repairs, of courseA few closing thoughts As I said, Im not an expert. These are just my thoughts. I hope some of them help. And, despite my experience, there are really good contractors out there to work for. But I know there are also many like the one I had, who was a charming guy and even had some good Yelp reviews.Taking this kind of work can be a good way to make extra money or a decent living if you cut the right deal. Even better if you and your contractor discover the fine art of creating a mutually-enjoyable, working relationship with each other AND the customer.Open, respectful communication at all levels can make your days feel mora enjoyable, leave customers more satisfied, and get your boss more referrals, which are the heart of the business. Taking that long to learn was a costly lesson Ill never be able to recoup no matter how long I work. Because salary earnings compound over time, Id already lost out on at least 20 YEARS of earnings as a baseline from which to abflug my negotiations at that stage of my career. I dont want you to have to try to figure this stuff out all on your own I rode the Struggle Bus until the wheels practically fell off, so YOU dont have to. They have already marked up the car some are just waiting for you not to negotiate.I learned a tip when I was in my 20s and purchasing my first car that has proven effective in negotiating over and over again. As a woman, I didnt want to get hoodwinked and bamboozled, so I researched how to negotiate buying a car. And a couple of lessons have stuck with me.One, always buy a car at the end of the month, preferably the last Wednesday of the month. Its even better if its raining or snowing heavily out when you go to the dealership. Salesmen are worried about making their quotas at the end of the month, so are more likely to negotiate with you. zeiteinteilung is everything. As is the case with knowing when is the appropriate time to negotiate for what you want at work. Asking for a raise at the end of a fiscal year isnt a great strategy. Sssh. Not another single solitary word. You can make facial grimaces (or even roll your neck), but dont speak until the car salesman reaches his best offer. If its not anywhere near yours, simply pick up your belongings and leave. OMG THIS WORKS Ive purchased four cars since I learned this method, and the silent treatment works every single time. He who speaks first LOSES.This tactic works, by the way, on boyfriends, children, and yes, even bosses And it always works if youve done your homework first and know when to fold them. You cant be afraid to walk away from something you really want. Which is why this is such a powerful negotiating tool. But dont overplay your h and. If youre bluffing - and arent really willing to walk away - a boss could just call your bluff and leave you holding your box of personal belongings standing at the curb wondering what the heck happenedBeing an independent thinker also helps with negotiating. For example, I hate it when were going into an arena or some other large public facility and there are 1,000 people trying to squeeze through one door like cattle, because its the only OPEN door. No one even thinks to try another door. That drives me BONKERS Im usually the one to try an alternate door. Do YOU try alternative proverbial doors when you are trying to negotiate a win-win at work? Or are you only focused on one solution?Im also not afraid to speak up. Im the one asking in the grocery store if they can get another cashier to help ring up customers if there are more than six people in line. Ummm-hmm. Im THAT girl. Being an independent thinker makes it easier for you to negotiate on your own behalf once you know that you have that power. But you have to believe in yourself. Do you?If you need more practice, try asking for help in small doses. For example, if youre at Target and you cant find the hand sanitizer, are you the type of person to walk up and down the aisles looking, just knowing you can find it on your own- OR do you stop to ask an employee for help immediately? And even request that they walk you to the sanitizer.These tactics may seem totally incongruous with negotiating for a higher salary, promotion, or different job assignments at work. But these small steps can grow your courage in speaking up for things that are important to you. And isnt that really what negotiating is all about?Give it a try.
