How to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster - The Muse

How to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster - The MuseHow to Limit Work Stress During a Natural Disaster Natural disasters- hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, wildfires, volcanic explosions- come in varying degrees of awfulness. As weve seen with hurricanes affecting Texas, North Carolina, and Florida, and the wildfires sweeping through California, they can wipe out entire communities and affect surrounding areas for years. The most important order of business before, during, and after a natural disaster is, of course, your safety and well-being and that of your loved ones. Following that, personal property takes precedence. But having lived through both Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Irma, I know that worrying about work during a natural disaster can increase your stress at a time when youd really rather be focusing on those other priorities. So from those whove been there, here are some tips to help you through the worst of times.Know Your Companys Emergency Respons e ProceduresSome natural disasters, like hurricanes, offer enough advance notice to make plans. Others come up much more suddenly, giving you little or no time to prepare.Guirong Grace Yan, the director of the Wind Hazard Mitigation Laboratory at Missouri University of Science Technology, advises taking steps to become familiar with your companys emergency response policies and procedures before anything actually happens. No matter where youre located, you should be informed about what to do in case of a crisis. That includes knowing your companys point person for crisis response. Make sure that colleague also has all your current contact information including, if pertinent, that of the person with whom you anticipate staying if youre evacuated. Knowing particular emergency procedures is especially important if you live or work in an area thats prone to certain types of disasters. But no matter where youre located, you should be informed about what to do in case of a crisis.Keep in T ouch However You CanSimply knowing who to call or text isnt enough. Wind, floods, or fires can take out cell towers and electricity, making normal communication difficult or impossible. Peter Yang, co-founder of the resume writing services company ResumeGo, saw his office in Houston destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. He recommends that everybody invest, if you can, in backup generators, extended batteries, and wireless cards, and keep managers updated on your status however possible, including through social media. Indeed, dont discount the value of Twitter, Instagram, and the like. Margit Bisztray, who owns the Key West Insider Guide, says that during Hurricane Irma, social media welches how everyone stayed in touch. Facebook for the people who had access to it, and Facebook by proxy-variable for people in touch with people down here who had satellite phones or land lines. That way, residents of the area, many of whom worked in the service industry, knew if there was even a functio ning restaurant or hotel to which they could return. Social media was how everyone stayed in touch. Facebook for the people who had access to it, and Facebook by proxy for people in touch with people down here who had satellite phones or land lines.Sometimes using social media can actually make it easier for you to contact folks from across the country (or the globe) than for those in the area to do the same. If any co-workers are outside the crisis zone, they may be able to help coordinate communications. Lisa Mattson, Director of Marketing and Communications for Jordan Vineyard Winery, was on vacation in Europe when the notorious Tubbs fire began to consume Sonoma County in California. Separated by thousands of miles and several time zones as the fire circled her home, she found relief in texting other employees and crafting outward-facing messages for the website about the state of the winery. Put Safety FirstFor those sudden events that hit while you are actually at work, dont stick around to lend a hand. Yan explains that, for example, damage from tornadoes can lead to unsafe building conditions and, in some cases, fires, so it is ideal to evacuate the building when the all clear is given. The same goes for any aftermath. Disaster recovery is usually best left to the professionals (although in some regions, like the Panhandle in Florida, that assistance may take a little while to come). If you feel that you are out of harms way, being agreeable helps everybody. On the other hand, a supervisor might request help with some tasks that arent quite within your job scope, such as covering computers with plastic to protect them from water damage. If you feel that you are out of harms way, being agreeable helps everybody. However, if youve offered your labor and its been accepted, dont expect to be paid for your time or services beyond your regular salary unless youve negotiated that in advance with your boss, Yan says.If youve evacuated from the office space and been given the go ahead to come back by emergency personnel, check in with your manager to help you make informed decisions about what parts of the office are truly functional or what work is due when. Ask for AssistanceIf the workplace is largely unaffected, but employees are hard hit- as was the case with Jordan Vineyard Winery, where several people lost everything- then work can become a haven. Normalcy and routine are an antidote to insurance matters, bank papers, this bill, that phone call. It gives you something else to think about, acknowledges Mattson, who more than a year later is still not back in her home, which had to undergo smoke remediation and reconstruction. But support is key. When you make contact with your supervisor post-disaster, give a timeline for your return. And dont be afraid to ask for what you need, from time off to an advance on a paycheck. Good employers often have rainy-day funds, or at least enough money to cover an extra payroll load. In times of disaster, funds are sometimes repurposed expressly for the means of helping employees and their families. At the winery, for example, John Jordan handed out $500 to every employee. Companies might bring in emotional therapy animals or schedule team-building activities. Take advantage of those even if you think theyre corny- the comfort and camaraderie really can help.Companies might bring in emotional therapy animals or schedule team-building activities. Take advantage of those even if you think theyre corny- the comfort and camaraderie really can help. You should also check your insurance plans and other benefits for mental health offerings and use them, whether theyre for therapy to handle feelings of displacement and loss or gym memberships to reduce stress levels. If you dont know what your options are, make an appointment with a manager or someone in HR and find out.At the same time, be willing to assume others duties until they, too, can return to work at full speed. Colleague s may have it better or much, much worse. What Yan calls the disaster recovery process, which can refer to the initial aftermath or to the long-term effects of much greater losses, is like grief. Its different for everybody, highly personal, and shouldnt be up for judgment. Decide to Stay or Start OverIn worst-case scenarios, businesses will have to completely start over, and youll be out of a job- even if only temporarily. If your personal life or property has been affected as well, this may be a good time to relocate rather than rebuild. Sometimes the memories make it too hard to stay. Mattson is now counseling victims of the Camp Fire on deciding whether to stay and fight with insurance companies or take what money is available to begin anew somewhere else. If youre emotionally and financially able to remain, it may result in real-life work benefits. Participating in local charitable efforts can not only help the region recover, but also assist you in achieving some closure. And when offices and businesses re-open, employers remember those who acted on that intrinsic need for solidarity, as Bisztray witnessed while working with an organization called Nourishing the Lower Keys to feed those who were rebuilding. Over and over, those who were the most generous, selfless, and accommodating with their time and resources were rewarded. Most restaurants were running on skeleton staff- usually a chef and then the owner doing most everything else, or maybe one server available. Everyone was very patient, waiting for staff to return and get a grip on their home situation before they could return to work, she recalls. Over and over, those who were the most generous, selfless, and accommodating with their time and resources were rewarded.Sometimes theres no escaping a natural disaster when its coming your way, and employers are (or should be) understanding should the worst occur. But by preparing and acting professionally to the best of your ability, you can, at the ver y least, reduce your stress levels and safeguard your reputation during and after an event.

Why the Future is Bright for In-House Creative Professionals

Why the Future is Bright for In-House Creative ProfessionalsWhy the Future is Bright for In-House Creative ProfessionalsAlex Center, design director at The Coca-Cola Company and a member of AIGAs In-house INitiative steering committee, explains why the time is ripe to consider an in-house creative career. While this years Creative Team of the Future research takes a close look at topics such as collaboration in the workplace, emerging roles and skills development, we also want to share a big-picture view of the in-house landscape with you. And who better to give an honest assessment than Alex Center?GET THE CREATIVE TEAM OF THE FUTURE REPORTCenter is a design director at The Coca-Cola Company and leads the strategy and creative vision for brands such as vitaminwater, smartwater and Powerade. Hes also a member of AIGAs In-house INitiative steering committee, a group devoted to addressing the unique opportunities and challenges faced by in-house creative teams. Here, Center talks about i n-house life and what it will take to thrive in a corporate environment. What advice do you have for designers who want to pursue and excel in an in-house creative role?Alex Center My best advice is to find something - a brand, a business, a movement, a yogurt company, a service provider - that you have a strong passion for. Working in-house, youre going to wake up thinking about the same mission every day, so its important that you have a whole lot of heart for it. Also, know early that youre going to have to put your ego to the side. In-house work is not about celebrating the singular designer or individual its about achieving a goal through the power of collaboration. It is definitely a team sport. What skills and attributes do you think will be necessary for in-house career advancement in the future? You need to have an equal understanding of brand- and business-building. Designers are now in leadership positions and are being asked to tackle the vast challenges that modern compa nies face. For years, weve been vying for a seat at the table and now we have it (which is actually a little daunting). Skills that make us unique as designers - like empathy, the ability to think holistically and systematically, and a level of taste and craft that allows us to execute with simplicity and ingenuity - will be invaluable to businesses. From your vantage point, how is the in-house environment changing? Its changing drastically every year. I think this moment is the most that people have ever talked about in-house design. There are so many talented designers working inside of companies and so many companies being founded by designers or building in-house teams. Its a crazy, exciting time for in-house creative professionals, and Im proud to be a part of it. Im finding that people who never considered working in-house are starting to think, How do I go work inside versus outside? As long as companies are valuing design and using it as a weapon to win, we will continue to see in-house grow. What unique opportunities do in-house creative jobs provide that others dont?I think that inside of every designer is the ambition to make an impact on the world that we live in - I know thats what motivates me. An in-house environment is the best place to create that impact and truly feel like you are building something. I admire and respect the work that agencies do, but at the end of the day they are always at the back seat of the businesses they work for. I like to drive the car. What most excites you about working in-house?I love having my hands in so many different types of projects at the same time, while working toward one mission. The more aspects of a business that people are involved in, the better they can be at solving problems and designing experiences. In todays world, every single human interaction with a brand needs to make a connection that is relevant and honest. Whether its a coupon or the future of how we consume products, its one ambition. Con necting those pieces and being a part of the complete puzzle is what excites me most about working in-house.Why do you feel in-house creative professionals have a bright future? We live in complex times and I dont see it getting any simpler. Designers are needed to figure out how to make the complex simpler and create solutions with the end consumer in mind. In-house used to be the place where you would go at the end of your career to get a big paycheck and achieve better work-life balance, but not to be in a position to make great design work. In the future, in-house will be the only place to make great design work.Anything else youd like to add?We are all really lucky to do the things we do every single day for a living. Dont ever forget that. And follow me on Instagram at thealexcenter.

What To Know When You Start Working for a Painting Contractor Company

What To Know When You Start Working for a Painting Contractor CompanyWhat To Know When You Start Working for a Painting Contractor CompanyThis isnt my usual type of post, and I am NOT an expert on the subject, but I have a friend who is getting his home painted, and it reminds me of the time I hired a painting contractor for my own apartment. I only learned afterward how little the workers (the actual painters) knew about painting and how little they probably knew about the contractor they were working for.Since working for a house painting company is a great way to bring in some extra money, Im writing this to at least clue in anyone who is thinking about this kind of work for the first time. AND I hope that any contractor who reads this will just maybe think about his workers, and how to make the work sweeter for both of themWhat I learned from my painting contractor My friends contractor was especially happy to get the job, since he says it means his workers will have extra money for the holidays. The contractor I hired a few years ago took most of the money himselfThe way he worked the deal, he charged me $25/hr (elend all that unreasonable where I live for a good painter), and made it seem like he or a senior coach would be on the premises all the time. They werent. He also made it seem like he had experienced painters. But he got the guys he sent me off of Craigslist he didnt even train them. And he gave them only $10/hr, pocketing the other $15/hr for himself, even though he pretty much left them on their own. He told me all this after the job was done when I was making him give me back some money for the shoddy workmanship. What a painter should probably know I understand that when you need work, you worry that asking too many questions or seeming too pushy can lose you the job. And sometimes it can. But there are some basic things that can hopefully help improve the quality of the experience from all endsIf there is a way for you to ask directly or sn oop around, knowing how much the contractor charges might help you negotiate your own portion especially if you are really good at what you do or willing to take on some supervisory responsibilities. Always helps to know if there is wiggle room, or if he (or she) is cutting it close on their share.Make sure you find out exactly what the contractor promised the customer. If the customer thinks they are getting ALL cracks and holes repaired, and you were just told to just fix some of them and then start painting, that can cause a huge problem.Make sure you know how long the customer thinks the job should take, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Again, sometimes a promise is made that workers are unable to live up to and they get to deal with yelling customers.Makes sure you have enough ventilation for yourself while working, even with non-toxic paint. And, since you are using your arm and other muscles in a repetitive manner, take short but frequent stretch breaks. That said, if y ou are scheduled to start at 9am each day, even without a supervisor, dont take a whole hour to set up so that the customer walks in on you at 10am just hanging out and talking (each day) with the half-hour prep work still not done. Breaks are important, but remember how unsettling and costly this is to a customer.BEFORE you start painting, go over the repairs and make sure the customer is satisfied with the condition, so that you wont have to keep going back and repairing once youre in the painting stage.Ask the contractor for painting tips. Dont be shy or worry about appearing stupid. If the person is experienced in the business, there are some basics that will help make you both look great.Direction of the paint brush stroke (depending on type of paint, I think, different-direction strokes can show)Evenness and smoothness of the roller and / or paint brush techniqueHow to use painters tape the right way (you can also google some of this)Any other professional tricks tips they ca n offer youBe aware of and smooth out any drips or thicker globs as you paint.Check for unpainted or sparsely-painted sections, especially when the base coat and top coat are almost the same color.Make sure that the trim is all the right color finish, especially if you are dealing with similar shades.Check where paint got to places it shouldnt be, including where walls meet meet ceiling and trimAfter its done, either you or the contractor should go over the paint job with the customer, for any last touches or to correct mistakes. Not only does this help spot things you might have missed, it helps involve the customer so they are part of the final closing phase. And remember that, in addition to the actual paint job, a careful clean-up leaves a great last impression. For extra points, the contractor should offer the customer a chance to live with it a day or two, so they can discover anything that was not done well. Sometimes a customer is so happy its done, their brain doesnt engage fully. A good contractor should make some room for that without opening the door to forever repairs, of courseA few closing thoughts As I said, Im not an expert. These are just my thoughts. I hope some of them help. And, despite my experience, there are really good contractors out there to work for. But I know there are also many like the one I had, who was a charming guy and even had some good Yelp reviews.Taking this kind of work can be a good way to make extra money or a decent living if you cut the right deal. Even better if you and your contractor discover the fine art of creating a mutually-enjoyable, working relationship with each other AND the customer.Open, respectful communication at all levels can make your days feel mora enjoyable, leave customers more satisfied, and get your boss more referrals, which are the heart of the business. You may even wind up starting your own painting contractor business one day hopefully as one of the good guysPlease feel free to add you r own tips to help workers and maybe even make for better painting contractors.Happy paintingSome more posts you might enjoy? Whats the best format for a resume PDF, MS Word, or txt? Most of the time, the best format for your resume is MS Word. This is because many companies use Applicant Tracking System software to sort through resumes for specific keywords related to the job opening. If you use a PDF format, the software may miss important elements of your resume. If you work in an industry where graphics and creativity are paramount, a PDF format may be important. Otherwise, your primary focus is on creating a document appropriate for ATS software. This means that the document matches the job description, includes important keywords, and has a format that tracking software wont reject. Check out our automation engineer resume sample for an example. You can also use our resume builder tool to effortlessly create a strong resume.2. What is the best design for an automation engineer resume? There are three recognized types of resumes chronological, functional, and combination. The best design for your resume depends on how much experience you have. The chronological format is the most common design and focuses on work history and job experiences appearing in reverse chronological order. The functional resume focuses on types of skills and experiences. This option is good for applicants with gaps in their work history and those who are switching from one industry to another. The third option is a combination that provides the chronological list of jobs and also includes sections that focus on skills. Check out our automation engineer resume sample for a good example.3. Whats the best way to include digital skills on an automation engineer resume?A firm grasp of computer programming and software development is necessary for work in this industry. You may have all of the skills necessary to be a great automation engineer, but if hiring ma nagers dont quickly see those skills on your resume, you may not get the opportunity. In our automation engineer resume sample, digital skills appear prominently near the top of the document. Specific software and digital systems appear in concise bullets, so recruiters and hiring professionals see those qualifications within a few seconds. Within the responsibilities sections of each job listing, the applicant delves further into the specific use of software and hardware, displaying digital skills in action.4. Whats the best way to list certifications on your automation engineer resume? In many IT fields today, the right licensing and certification can improve your employment options. Most of your certifications belong in a specific certification and licensing section, as shown in our automation engineer resume sample. Include one or more of those certificates and training in the summary at the top of your document to increase the likelihood of hiring managers seeing those certifica tions.5. How do you write about hobbies on your resume? Most of the time, hobbies dont belong on resumes. You have limited space on your document to include your top qualifications, and you need to focus on the information that is most important. Our automation engineer resume sample is a good example of keeping content concise and easy to read. The exception to this rule is a hobby that showcases your skills.More Sample Engineer ResumesAutomation Engineer Resume Automation Sales Engineer ResumeAutomotive Quality Engineer Resume Automotive Test Engineer Resume Avionics Systems Engineer Resume Avionics Test Engineer Resume Battery Test Engineer Resume

Negotiating necessities Powerful tactics to get what you want

Negotiating necessities Powerful tactics to get what you wantNegotiating necessities Powerful tactics to get what you wantSelf-Assessment Quiz True or FalseI feel comfortable speaking up at meetings.I have created a team of people I can go to for help.I am aware of my emotions when things are not going my way.I am not afraid to try opening closed doors. In my blogs, Ive shared my horror story about when my cousin Mark saved the day and negotiated a salary offer on my behalf. It welches how I learned firsthand about the power of negotiating. The salary increase he got me bumped me into an earning bracket that wouldve taken years to accomplish at the rate I was going. But I was 40 by the time I learned to ask for what I wanted. Taking that long to learn was a costly lesson Ill never be able to recoup no matter how long I work. Because salary earnings compound over time, Id already lost out on at least 20 YEARS of earnings as a baseline from which to abflug my negotiations at that stage of my career. Its one of the reasons I started Powerful Penny LLC. I dont want you to have to try to figure this stuff out all on your own I rode the Struggle Bus until the wheels practically fell off, so YOU dont have to. So hear me when I say, Build your negotiation skills nowIt is imperative to your success that you stop blindly accepting first offers, that you start a conversation after an initial offer is made, and that you know your worth. Theres a great book I just read called Never Split the Difference Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss. Add it to your library, pronto. Im telling yall, youll thank me laterIf negotiating scares the crap out of you (and it probably does if you answered FALSE to most of the questions in the self-assessment quiz), why not start small? Home Can your spouse do the dishes tonight so that you have more hours to work your side hustle? Farmers Market That bushel of sweet potatoes is $6.00. Will they take $5.00? Used Car Lot Will they take $2,000 off the asking price? They have already marked up the car some are just waiting for you not to negotiate.I learned a tip when I was in my 20s and purchasing my first car that has proven effective in negotiating over and over again. As a woman, I didnt want to get hoodwinked and bamboozled, so I researched how to negotiate buying a car. And a couple of lessons have stuck with me.One, always buy a car at the end of the month, preferably the last Wednesday of the month. Its even better if its raining or snowing heavily out when you go to the dealership. Salesmen are worried about making their quotas at the end of the month, so are more likely to negotiate with you. zeiteinteilung is everything. As is the case with knowing when is the appropriate time to negotiate for what you want at work. Asking for a raise at the end of a fiscal year isnt a great strategy. Like the car salesman, worried about making his quota, your boss is concerned about coming in under budget. Chan ces are, there are no dollars left for unexpected salary increases. So do your homework. Ask instead dureif the budget planning season for the upcoming fiscal year. Two, after youve done your research (and learned for example that its best to buy a car on a rainy 4th Wednesday), make your best offer, then STOP TALKING. Sssh. Not another single solitary word. You can make facial grimaces (or even roll your neck), but dont speak until the car salesman reaches his best offer. If its not anywhere near yours, simply pick up your belongings and leave. OMG THIS WORKS Ive purchased four cars since I learned this method, and the silent treatment works every single time. He who speaks first LOSES.This tactic works, by the way, on boyfriends, children, and yes, even bosses And it always works if youve done your homework first and know when to fold them. You cant be afraid to walk away from something you really want. Which is why this is such a powerful negotiating tool. But dont overplay your h and. If youre bluffing - and arent really willing to walk away - a boss could just call your bluff and leave you holding your box of personal belongings standing at the curb wondering what the heck happenedBeing an independent thinker also helps with negotiating. For example, I hate it when were going into an arena or some other large public facility and there are 1,000 people trying to squeeze through one door like cattle, because its the only OPEN door. No one even thinks to try another door. That drives me BONKERS Im usually the one to try an alternate door. Do YOU try alternative proverbial doors when you are trying to negotiate a win-win at work? Or are you only focused on one solution?Im also not afraid to speak up. Im the one asking in the grocery store if they can get another cashier to help ring up customers if there are more than six people in line. Ummm-hmm. Im THAT girl. Being an independent thinker makes it easier for you to negotiate on your own behalf once you know that you have that power. But you have to believe in yourself. Do you?If you need more practice, try asking for help in small doses. For example, if youre at Target and you cant find the hand sanitizer, are you the type of person to walk up and down the aisles looking, just knowing you can find it on your own- OR do you stop to ask an employee for help immediately? And even request that they walk you to the sanitizer. These tactics may seem totally incongruous with negotiating for a higher salary, promotion, or different job assignments at work. But these small steps can grow your courage in speaking up for things that are important to you. And isnt that really what negotiating is all about?Give it a try. It is never too late or too early to learn the power of negotiating. Get started todayCheryl Grace is the sassy aunt, best friend, and mentor youve always needed in your life.
