In many cases we thoughtlessly write down a rundown of conceptual things we need to achieve. Get advanced, get a raise, locate another jobthese are objectives most everybody has at the top of the priority list, at any rate eventually, on the grounds that they are away from of progress in our vocations. In any case, its urgent to comprehend your inspirations before defining objectives that are to some degree subjective. For instance, maybe youd like to find a new position - yet is a completely new gig truly what youre focusing on? Ponder whether youd rather attempt to make a parallel move inside your organization. On the off chance that that doesnt appear to be engaging, possibly theres an objective you can set in your present place of employment - regardless of whether it includes a discussion with your chief or your immediate reports, or whether it includes requesting a raise or advancement - that would make you more joyful. So also, if youre seeking after a raise or an advancement, pause for a moment to think about why. Is it accurate to say that you are feeling overlooked or underestimated at work? Great Question A Lawyer Asked
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Great Question A Lawyer Asked Recently I was asked a great question. I say it was a great question because I lived the answer in my own career. The question: How can I develop a niche practice when I have done no legal work in the niche area? Iâve written many blog posts about niche practices. You can do a search and find them. The beginning part of my answer is always the same: What you do with your billable time and what you do with your non-billable time does not have to be the same. As you may know, Iâve done presentations for law firms and bar associations on how to development a Niche Practice. In 1978, I began my focus on transportation construction contractors when I had no experience handling a matter for the transportation construction industry. I remember my partner mentor at the time telling me no one wanted to represent transportation construction contractors. Thankfully, I didnât let him discourage me. Why did I pick that niche? Well, I had experience in the USAF litigating government contracts. Transportation contractors bid and are awarded government contracts, only most are state government contracts. So, I was building off of a foundation I already had. I would have considered government contractors more generally. Only, none of the big government contractors were anywhere near Roanoke, Virginia. There were large highway construction contractors in the area and two of them were owned by the families of my Virginia Tech classmates and friends. So, at least I knew someone in the industry. Finally, I didnât know another lawyer in all of the United States who was focused solely on the transportation construction industry. I donât think any of the construction lawyers wanted to focus just on transportation contractors. That meant I had a chance to be thought of as the âgo toâ lawyer for the industry. You may know that my first step was to write a law review article. It took forever. Because I was writing the law review article for the Public Contracts Law Journal, I was asked by that section to speak at the ABA Annual Meeting in New Orleans in August of 1981. Other than practicing public speaking that turned out to be a waste of time. Once again, a lawyer tried to discourage me. In a conference call the moderator of my panel, a DC lawyer said: Cordell, no one cares about highway contractors. I was actually encouraged by that advice. If no lawyers in the Public Contracts Section of the ABA cared about highway contractors, I thought I should be the first. Later in November of 1981, I was asked to speak to Virginia Contractors. If youâve been reading this blog for sometime, you likely know that one presentation literally launched my niche practice career. I look back now, 35 years later, and think about how fortunate I was. Enough about me: If you are wondering whether you can try a particular niche, give it the same kind of thought I did many years ago and consider these two things: I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Benefits for Using Drones in the Construction Business
Benefits for Using Drones in the Construction Business Benefits for Using Drones in the Construction Business Have you ever seen a movie where the shot begins with a close-up of the actors face and then suddenly it zooms back and up, finally ending high above, looking down on the actor who is now just a speck in a vast forest? How did they do that? Did they use a helicopter? Wouldnât those swirling blades be dangerously close to the actorâs face? Or maybe they attached the camera to a fancy Hollywood crane. If so, how did they get it up so high, so fast? What you saw was a drone shot. Todays high-quality drones can hover close to the actorâs face without stirring up wind. Then, in a moment, they can shoot sky high. And with the proper camera, they can yield a shot that is equal to a standard HD movie camera. Examine Hard-to-Reach Areas with Drones If drones can work for Hollywood, they can work in construction, too. Youâve probably seen how the marketing types like the beautiful drone footage showing the exterior of the building in the setting sun for their real estate pitches. But on the construction site, drones can be invaluable inspection tools for examining hard to reach and unsafe exterior areas. Letâs say you have a partially completed, tall building. A huge rainstorm hits one night and the next day someone spots water stains on one of the completed floors. The first question youâll probably ask: Whereâs the leak? Rather than divert a crew to go look for a bad seam or crack, why not hire a qualified drone operator to search the exterior surfaces for you? As you watch live video streaming from the drone, the operator can command the drone to slowly cover the area. If you spot something that looks suspicious, the drone can move in for a closer look. And suddenly, you see itâ"a crack in the wall! You can even take a video to send to others for analysis. You donât have to be on a giant construction site to use a drone. Residential roofing contractors use drones now to inspect high-pitch roofs rather than risk their necks climbing ladders. Drones are useful on any construction site where you need a good look, but itâs too dangerous, too costly, or just too time-consuming to send someone to examine it. They can give you the big pictureâ"showing the complete structure from far away or move in close to bring you the small details. Soon, drones may even be equipped with infrared scanners to help locate structural stress-points and invisible energy leaks. Hire the Right Drone Operator One thing to note about drones is that they are restricted from flying in certain areas. The FAA and Department of Interior have restricted drone flights around several national sites ranging from the Statue of Liberty in New York to the Hoover Dam in Nevada. Municipalities may also have restrictions, so it is best to check before you go buzzing off around the neighborhood. You can find qualified drone operators online. Just like any other sub, make sure they know what they are doing, have the proper equipment for what you want, and carry the right kinds of insurance. Also, explain exactly what you need and any obstructions or conditions that might affect the droneâs operationâ"for instance, scaffolding or high winds. Drones can be an important part of your on-site construction team, but if not handled appropriately they can be dangerous. Before implementing drones on your construction site, make sure youve completed a 30-Hour OSHA safety training.

In Defense of the Messy Desk
In Defense of the Messy Desk In Defense of the Messy Desk Consistently increasingly more data is tossed at you. New mail, reports from different councils, solicitations, recommendations, and all the more completely hit your work area a few times each day. You are too occupied to even think about dealing with it immediately so it just starts to accumulate. Your work area starts to appear as though a combat area. The issue here isn't that your work area is chaotic; the issue is that significant stuff gets lost. It either gets covered by new material coming in, or its in the new material however isn't taken note. Accordingly, you invest a lot of energy in things that are basically dire as opposed to those that are significant. At the point when your supervisor needs to know how soon she can have that report for the Vice President, you dont need to reveal to her you didnt notice the update she sent you mentioning the report. Nor will your supervisor be excited to hear that the format for the new product offering is late in light of the fact that you put it in a safe spot and it got concealed and you overlooked it. A few people will disclose to you the most ideal approach to take care of this issue is a perfect work area. Others state a mess is alright. Whos right? Jumbled Desk, Cluttered Mind In the relatively recent past, there was a well known articulation a jumbled work area is an indication of a jumbled brain. That articulation offered ascend to a whole industry intended to help business administrators clean their work areas as an indication of their psychological keenness. Almost certainly you have seen motion pictures where the manager sits in his office on a midtown high rise. He sits behind a glass-top work area without any drawers. The main embellishments are the amazing pen set for marking significant reports and a phone or radio so he can provide orders. Then again... Numerous individuals see nothing amiss with heaps of paper covering the work area, in any event, spilling onto the seat seats and office floor. They quote maxims like a jumbled work area is an indication of virtuoso and a muddled work area is just an indication of a chaotic work area. We as a whole know somebody whose work area is that way. You dont perceive how they can even tell if the work area is metal or wood. However, when you approach them for something, they go right to a heap, leaf through 2 or 3 sheets, and pull out what you requested. What Works For You The two sides are right. The issue isn't which is right. The issue is which will make you progressively viable. There are a couple of basic rules that apply to the two methodologies, yet the key is to work in a way that permits you to be best. Nearly everybody needs to dispose of a portion of the messiness around their work area, however having close to a solitary thing around your work area at any one time wont work for a significant number of us. Numerous individuals are chipping away at a few undertakings simultaneously (or nearly a similar time). Inventive sorts want to have motivation encompassing them. Conscientious people need volumes of reference material close within reach. A few people feel the heaps of work make them look occupied and, hence, keep them more secure in the midst of cutbacks. Others feel a perfect work area shows how proficient they are at completing the work. What is significant is to do what works for you. The most effective method to Tame the Monster Regardless of whether you are going for the sterile glass work area, or basically need to carry somewhat more request to the disorder of your work area, there are a couple of essential rules: Truly Want to Improve: We dont suggest the serious methodology that some do. Lamentably, that leaves reasons to be excessively simple on yourself. This endeavor to make your work area not so much jumbled but rather more effective relies upon you making a genuine effort.Keep, Toss, or Move: Find three holders. Mark the littlest keep. Mark the biggest hurl. Have another holder marked move. The extremely fundamental stuff will go into your keep holder to be arranged later. Anything that you need to bring home or part with goes into the move holder. Everything else goes into the hurl compartment. Start With the Oldest: You can judge by taking a gander at them which heap is the most seasoned. As a rule, it is farthest from your seat. It will be most straightforward to discard things from this pile.Evaluate Each Piece Only Once: Look at every thing in the heap. Choose which holder it will go into. You cannot slow down it around your work area for some other time, you need to choose now. Put everything into one of the three compartments. There is no other option.Ask Yourself This: The main inquiry is do I have this elsewhere, or would i be able to get it from somebody? On the off chance that you have a duplicate in your email, or in a report, or on the work area of the individual who arranged the market examination, and so forth., you dont need to keep another duplicate. Hurl it. At that point inquire as to for what reason do I need this? In the event that the appropriate response is a) to make a move on it, b) to accomplish something with it when I get more data from somebody, or c) to allude to as I accomplish other work, put it into the keep heap. (After you dispose of the messiness you will re-sort your keep heap by those three classes, so don't hesitate to isolate them now. It will spare time later.) If your answer was whatever else, hurl that thing. Be Ruthless and Brave: As you progress through each heap, drawing nearer and near the things that just showed up, be savage in your choices. Show no mercy. In the event that you truly dont need it, hurl it. Furthermore, be courageous. Dont hold tight to something since somebody may get some information about it sometime in the not so distant future. Dont fabricate a stronghold of paper to ensure yourself. Deal with the Issue Your work area doesnt must be sterile and totally without paper, in spite of the fact that it tends to be if that makes a difference. You will likely arrange your work area so it boosts your effectiveness. In the event that that implies a couple of a larger number of heaps around your work area than the individual nearby, that is alright - gave all that you kept encourages you meet your objective of expanded proficiency.

A selection representative knows this when the competitor draws clear equals between a similar activity work in Industry An and Industry B. For instance, a previous educator who can obviously depict how she created affinity with troublesome understudies is probably going to have the option to apply those abilities in unpleasant circumstances as a medical caretaker expert. Its simple for certain contender to state I can do this, Sollmann says, however an applicant focused on exchanging vocations will have the option to draw point by point matches between the two. They Volunteer Being administration disapproved is an absolute necessity in medicinal services. Chipping in can show a tendency toward that viewpoint, says Linda Kuriloff, a creator and profession pro. Search for proof of a forthcoming representatives enthusiasm for the helping callings, Kuriloff says. Likewise, the individuals who decide to chip in will in general be sufficiently modest to be prepared to do what they havent done previously and open to addressing others needs, she says. For instance, a recently stamped authorized useful attendant with a volunteer history of working with the older, the underserved or in havens will carry those abilities and encounters to his vocation. Things for Recruiters to Consider During the Job Offer
Things for Recruiters to Consider During the Job Offer As a recruiter, your job is to find the perfect candidate for a company. While a booming job market is great for business, it can present a challenge for finding longtime hires. After all, with more opportunity comes more turnover. Millennials especially have high turnover rates at jobs. In fact, a study by Gallup revealed that 21% of millennials have switched jobs in the past year and another 43% plan to leave their current job sometime in the next two years. If you find a candidate that the company is excited to hire, youâll want to make sure to tailor your offer to the candidate and what theyâve expressed is most important to them during the interview process. After all, getting an offer is both exciting and overwhelming for candidates, as it can take hours for them to review the benefits to find out what the true value of the offer is. Here are some things to mention during the job offer: 1. Quantifiable Benefits: This one seems obvious. Youâll, of course, mention the salary when you make an offer a new recruit. But you can take it a step further knowing some market information. If the role is offering above the city average, say so to the candidate. Youâll also want to explain any bonus, commission or stock options as clear as possible, in case the recruit has never had an offer that included those benefits so they donât fully understand the value. Another great place to sell your candidate is on the benefits package, trusting that the company does, of course, have some good selling points. Find out where the benefits package is strongest and sell candidates on that! 2. Non-quantifiable Benefits: To a lot of millennials, non-quantifiable benefits are just as valuable as quantifiable ones when theyâre deciding whether or not to accept an offer. Make sure to discuss with your candidate what future growth opportunities in the company look like. Also, if the company offers flexible work hours, good work-life balance, and a company culture that aligns with the candidate, make sure to mention this and try to attach value. For example, two work from home days will save money on gas, the time during the commute, and gift employees with a peace of mind they may not have gotten at their old company. If you are recruiting for a company that is on the rise or has a consistently good market standing, this is also important to mention. Stability is a great asset for potential hires. If your company has been facing a downturn, frame it to your candidate as a way they can come in and make a big impact. 3. Additional Benefits Worth Mentioning: Sometimes an offer is worth more depending on the additional benefits. For example, student loan repayment and relocation reimbursement can directly put more money in your candidates pocket! If the company you are recruiting for offers business travel, let the candidate know that they can build up travel points to save money on personal travel later down the road. 4. Unusual Work Perks: A lot of companies offer hidden work perks, and these benefits can go a long way with candidates who share the same passion and values. For example, Bumble offers on-site manicures and blowouts and Patagonia lets employees surf during work hours when there are good waves. Military Transition Assistance
Military Transition Assistance John Durfee wrote to me recently about his experience in transitioning from Gunnery Sargent to business. John, like many veterans, found that choosing a new career was a daunting task. It certainly wasnât the piece of cake that the U.S. Army ads made it seem. âThey made it look easy; a female soldier in fatigues running across a training course, and then she morphs into a business executive holding a attaché case. Looks easy right?â Without the special effects, itâs a longer challenge for most vets. When I asked John what resources had been the most helpful, he introduced me to the Tip of the Arrow Foundation. Tip of the Arrow Foundation (TOA) is a not-for-profit organization providing career counseling transition assistance for Americas military veterans. TOA is staffed by volunteers from human resource and business, many of whom are military veterans themselves. They work hand in hand with community, governmental, and business leaders to prepare veterans for civilian careers. John also sought advice from family and friends, sitting down for serious heart to heart talks with family members about options. âIt was probably one of the most difficult things to do,â John says, âas I didnât want to seem vulnerable. But I needed some advice and support from the most important people to me. It was uncomfortable at first, but after a while, we were able to lay out a plan. They let me know that they were proud of me for what I did, that they respected my decision making skills and integrity in my reasons for not re-enlisting.â Monster.com, the online job search engine, offers an online career transition center for military members. In addition to providing resources for active duty members and their families, Military.com provides information on education, military benefits, and stories of other veterans whove already made the move to civilian jobs. Monsterâs online community t Military.com allows active duty members and retirees to connect, list active duty accomplishments, and use military connections to help land a job after leaving the service. Monster says that over ten million people have joined the network. In the end, John chose a career that related to what he knew from his military training and would keep him interested. He found a position that used his skills in military simulation games like paintball and airsoft, as well as firearms. Heâs now a manager for Airsoft target=_blankAirsplat, the nations largest retailer of Airsoft Guns including Spring Airsoft Rifles.

10 Social Platforms Best Suited for Building Your Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
10 Social Platforms Best Suited for Building Your Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What is your favorite social media platform for enhancing your personal brand and why? The following answers are provided by members of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the worlds most promising young entrepreneurs. In partnership with Citi, YEC recently launched BusinessCollective, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. 1. Facebook For us, Facebook has always had the highest level of engagement, and reaches the broadest audience. Its also allowed us to have more personal conversations with our customers, and given us an opportunity for creating real connections with those individuals. Its also worked as a support platform, and has helped us streamline that process tremendously. Blair Thomas, eMerchantBroker 2. Instagram Visuals are the best way to connect with people and make a lasting impression. I like that I can share personal images on Instagram and a story behind the image. Itâs the best platform for connecting with people on a more personal level, and giving them an inside look at who I am as a person and professional. Stanley Meytin, True Film Production 3. LinkedIn I think LinkedIn is a tremendous tool for shaping your personal brand. You can use it for basic information and experience, but then you can participate in groups, as well as publish articles and press that further define who you are as an entrepreneur or thought leader. Cynthia Johnson, Ipseity Media 4. Medium Its hard to communicate who you are in a status update. Its much easier to give a glimpse into who you are through a more detailed blog post. Medium is a great platform to enhance your personal brand, because content has a longer shelf life, and content is easier to discover through search. Pick a topic youd like to brand yourself with, post consistently about the topic and enhance your brand. Brett Farmiloe, Markitors Digital Marketing Company 5. Pinterest Pinterest has been a huge asset for our company. We know the demographics is almost all women and have been able to create content and engage with the women audience. It is easy to see what is working and what does not work based on how many saves you get. Chris Gronkowski, Ice Shaker 6. Podcasting While most people think of social media as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Snapchat, you may want to look to promote your personal brand to the millions of people who listen to podcasts. Applications like iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Spotify allow you to elevate yourself above the noise of normal social media, and create a brand conveying professionalism and authority every week. Matt Wilson, Under30Experiences 7. Snapchat The informality of the Snapchat channel makes for a great avenue for people to engage with their audience and enhance their personal brands. Because the Snapchat technology is designed around instant, real and transparent communication, either with photos with filters or videos, people can speak their brand effectively without over-thinking their message and coming across as corporate. Diego Orjuela, Cables Sensors 8. Twitter Twitter is a great platform to share articles and content that you create. Twitter rewards those with unique, interesting content in the form of followers, which ultimately helps create a personal brand. Hashtags also make it easy to find new content to read and share. Syed Balkhi, OptinMonster 9. Quora Being active on Facebook and Twitter is basically a requirement these days. But when it comes to my favorite platform, it has to be Quora. Answering questions is great mental exercise that promotes your business and yourself. Every answer you post wont be directly related to your business or industry, but theyll all build your brand while helping others. Andrew Saladino, Kitchen Cabinet Kings 10. YouTube YouTube has established itself as the place to build a personal brand with a loyal following. As long as you have good, unique content that people want to see, the subscribers will follow organically. Once you start getting traction on YouTube, you will find that the same people will search for you on your other social media channels. Jared Atchison, WPForms
